2016-2017 WAYNE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING SPANISH SYLLABUS
Mr. Jonathan A. Penailillo
Course Description:
Spanish at WSE is designed to introduce students to the Spanish language and culture. The general goals of the course are to acquaint students with everyday Spanish language and Hispanic cultures and to provide opportunities for language practice and cultural awareness. Course curriculum will be developed by the teacher and will include resources such as Spanish textbooks, worksheet, supplemental activity books, and cultural videos. The teacher will combine these resources as needed to create an informative and challenging curriculum for all students.
Instructional Philosophy:
I believe that all students have the ability to learn Spanish and to be respectful to each other at all times. I will provide a positive learning environment and will meet the diverse learning styles of the students throughout the semester. I believe that fluency in a language is acquired by learning not only the language, but also learning about the cultures associated with that language. I will incorporate cultural experiences into as many lessons as possible throughout the year to ensure the students are exposed to a variety of cultural information. Students will work individually as well as in pairs and groups on written and oral projects and assignments. I will also use TPR (total physical response), videos and songs to teach vocabulary, grammar, and cultural points to all students.
Course Assessment Plan:
Students will be assessed by both traditional paper and pencil tests as well as more open-ended performance-based assessments such as oral presentations, written responses, and projects. Each of the Power Standards will be assessed in the following ways:
• Performance-based assessments
• Oral assessments
• Oral Performance-based assessments
• Written assessments
• Project-based assessments
Determining a Grade for the Course:
• Participation and class work 40%
• Homework 5%
• Interrogation 10%
• Projects 10%
• Quizzes and tests 35%
Absences
If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to attain missed work from the teacher before or after school. Students should not interrupt daily activities for this. The teacher will not be responsible for tracking down students who miss assignments.
Classroom Materials
In order to get the most out of your class experience, you must bring your materials to class every day. You should bring a three-ring binder with loose-leaf notebook paper or a spiral notebook (which I personally prefer). A bilingual Spanish/English English/Spanish Dictionary to keep at home.
Important to know that I will not allow the use of digital translators for this class.
Clipboard and expo markers for their personal use.
If possible a pocket Spanish verbs guide.
